Marii Buratei (蕪羅亭 魔梨威, Buratei Marii) is one the protagonists of the anime and manga series, Joshiraku.

Buratei acts as the family name with "tei" ending all the family names of the characters. She's also the supposed main character of the series.

Appearance[]

  • Kimono
    • Kimono Color: Yellow
    • Inner Kimono Color: White
    • Haori (jacket over kimono) Color: Red
    • Datejime (band around waist of kimono) Color: Green
  • Pajamas: N/A (She states she sleeps naked)
  • Tracksuit: Red with white stripe on sides

Personality[]

The other four believe and immediately pin her down as someone who would usually wear a tracksuit or something, this is later on proved to be true.

Marii is suspected by the other characters in the group (although it may or may not be a long running joke) to be a crossdressing boy due to her mannerisms, the way she speaks and acts, etc. The group also mentioned that if they were in an all-girls high school, Marii would be the one to receive chocolates from all the girls there. When Gankyou observed Marii during a visit to the local bathhouse, she said that Marii's body could be described as neither a man nor woman, but a child, implying that Marii is flat-chested and lacks any sort feminine shape or curve.

When someone brings up a question that she find rather annoying, she will often pull out a small white fan and point to the person while using her catchphrase, つまんねー事聞くなよ! (Tsuman'nē koto kiku na yo!) which can be translated into English as "Don't ask such stupid questions!"

Trivia[]

  • Marii is essentially tone deaf
  • Marii has no rhythm in addition to her often awful timing
  • She has a blue bruise-looking spot on her right butt cheek known as a "Mongolian spot".
  • When read in Japanese order (i.e. family name first), her full name is a pun on "Bloody Mary".
  • In the special page section of chapter 20, she revealed that prior to working as a rakujo performer, she previously worked as an ama diver.
  • Although she tries to portray herself as an Edoko (a native of Tokyo), she is originally from Tokushima Prefecture as Gankyo pointed out.
  • In the 2013 anime short, Toaru Majutsu no Index-tan: Miracle of Endymion Movie Edition, as the group of girls walk past Ladylee Tangleroad and ask why did she build Endymion, she immediately gets up, pulls out a white fan and says つまんねー事聞くなよ!, as a nod to Marii and her catchphrase.
    • Both Lady Tangleroad and Marii share the same voice actress. Additionally both Joshiraku and Toaru Majutsu no Index were animated by J.C. Staff.
    • Later in the short, a partially censored promotional poster for Joshiraku featuring Marii and the other girls can be seen on a wall.
